Women’s Health
Menopause is a natural phase in a woman’s life that marks the end of her menstrual cycles and fertility. It typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55, with the average age being 51 in the United States. Menopause is diagnosed when a woman has gone 12 consecutive months without a period, signaling the cessation of ovarian function and a decrease in the production of hormones such as estrogen and progesterone.
Treatments
Estrogen: (Different Forms of Estrogen)
Used for: Hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, and other menopausal symptoms.
Testosterone
- Used for: Improving libido, energy, and muscle mass. Some women experience a decline in testosterone as they age, leading to lower libido and fatigue.
- Bioidentical form: Typically in cream, patch, or injection form.
DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone):
- Used for: Enhancing mood, energy, and overall well-being. It’s a precursor hormone that helps produce both estrogen and testosterone.
- Available in oral or topical forms.
Forms of Bioidentical Hormones
Topical creams, gels, or lotions:
- Applied directly to the skin (commonly to the arms, thighs, or abdomen) for absorption.
- Allows for steady release of hormones over time.
Patches
- Similar to topical creams but in patch form, typically used for estrogen (Vivelle-Dot, Climara).
Oral tablets or capsules
- Taken by mouth, often used for progesterone (Prometrium), though oral forms of bioidentical estrogen are also available (estradiol).
Injections
- Testosterone and other hormones can be injected for a more direct method of hormone delivery.
Progesterone
- Used for balancing the effects of estrogen and protecting the uterus in women who still have a uterus (when using estrogen), regulating periods, and improving mood.
